10 Rental Items To Help Prepare Your Yard For Spring

Some might say there's no greater feeling of accomplishment than enjoying your own magazine-worthy lawn and garden. Whether it's a some raised beds and bushes, a formal garden, a small vegetable patch or a simple grass lawn, to get the results you want takes time, hard work and dedication.

If you're looking at sprucing up your yard this spring but aren't sure what tools you need to get started, we've compiled this list of the top 10 rental items to help prepare your yard for spring!

Dethatcher - A dethatcher uses a series of vertically oriented blades to cut through a lawn's thatch layer. It is used to loosen the thatch and bring it to the lawn surface so that it can be removed. Renting a dethatcher is a good option in mid- to late spring when grass is actively growing and able to recover quickly. Mowing the lawn slightly lower than usual and moistening the soil surface will make dethatching easier.

Hedge Trimmer - Renting hedge trimmers for trimming (cutting, pruning) hedges or bushes will get your yard looking nice and clean. Using a hedge trimmer can be the quickest, most efficient way to trim rows of shrubs and bushes or to style detailed and intricate landscaping. High-quality trimmers should provide a clean, even cut, giving your yard a beautiful, well-groomed appearance.

Tiller - A tiller is a garden tool for cultivating soil, or getting it ready for planting. Tilling is necessary because soil often is compacted, weedy or rocky, none of which are good for growing grass, plants, flowers or vegetables. To prepare the soil for planting, you will need to till it and consider working in soil amendments such as compost or fertilizer as you go. The easiest way to do this is by renting a lawn tiller, or rotary tiller.

Brush Mower - A brush mower or brush cutter is generally used to cut tall grass (grass taller than 6” – 8”), weeds, brush, shrubs and woody material between 1” and 2” in diameter — for any thicker material, you may want to use a chainsaw. Rent a brush cutter if you are tending to overgrown fields and neglected lawns. They can also be used to cut grass under trees where rocks and other hard objects can damage a finishing mower and along banks and slopes that can be difficult to tend to.

Landscape Bedding Edger - A bedding edger rental will transform your garden beds and landscaping into a work of art. Its maneuverability and versatility ensure the results that you want, making creating tight tree rings and beautifully shaped beds fast and easy! Whether edging beds or digging a trench, the BedEdger will produce faster, cleaner results.

Pressure Washer - Pressure washers are a must for cleaning up siding, drive ways and side walks. Once the pollen is done, rent a pressure washer to clean up all the yellow caked on everything.

Stump Grinder - Cutting down trees? Don’t just let the root bulbs decay, grind them up and the ground will be back to normal before you know it. A stump grinder or stump cutter removes tree stumps using a rotating cutting disc that chips away the wood.

Lawn Aerator - An aerator is tool used to create holes in the soil to help your grass grow. In smaller lawns, aeration can improve soil drainage and encourage worms, microfauna and microflora which require oxygen. Renting an aerator and using it on your lawn will allow oxygen, water and nutrients to easily reach grass roots. You can also use a soil conditioner product with beneficial microorganisms that aerate the soil so roots grow better. The overall result is a lush green lawn and a healthier, more productive garden. Just attach the product to your garden hose and spray.

Lawn Mower - If you don't need to purchase a lawn mower or have no where to store it, it may be worth renting a lawn mower when you need it, especially for smaller lawns. You can find a small push mower or commercial zero-turn mower from most equipment rental shops. Mow your lawn to a height of 2 1/2 to 3 1/2 inches. Mowing high and mowing often gives your lawn a tougher turf less susceptible to drought, weeds and summer heat, resulting in a greener lawn.

Weed Trimmer / Weed Eater -  Renting a weed trimmer can be good if you’re not going to be using it several times a year. Also referred to as a weed eater or string trimmer, this garden tool is one of the most useful power tools for keeping up the appearance of your yard. It’s ability to get into small areas where a lawn mower can’t reach makes it a “must have” for anyone who wants their yard looking its best.

Safety: As with any power tool, proper operation is the key to safety when using a these garden tools. In addition to reading the user's manual so you understand proper operation, always wear protective eyewear and gloves. Hearing protection may be necessary for some garden tools.
