Mow High
By keeping the blades of your grass on the taller side, you will keep the soil cool, shaded, and you will need to water it less. As a general rule, try not to cut more than ⅓ of the grass blade each time you mow. When you mow, be sure to grasscycle or leave the clippings on the lawn. The clippings will decompose and help feed your grass.
Feed Early
Feeding in the early summer will keep your lawn strong during the hot and dry portions of the summer. Over-fertilization risks harming your lawn as it experiences enough stress during these months. Use a fertilizer designed for summer feeding, and follow the instructions strictly.
Note: If you have cool-season grass, fertilize in the spring and the fall rather than during the summer.
Treat for Pests
Summer brings out all of the pesky insects, but not all are harmful to your lawn. Japanese beetles, June bugs, and European chafers are some of the bugs that will munch on your grass, causing wilting and bare patches. Watch out for these pests and act quickly to avoid losing patches of your yard for the summer.
